Black worms or millipedes belong to the Diploda category. There are 13,000 species all living on the ground. This is where our well-known centipede also belongs. They carry many pairs of pseudopods but in fact they carry two pairs of legs in each part of their body. Their number varies but usually the actual feet do not exceed ten.

They have a pair of antennas and simple eyes. Millipedes love darkness, so they usually come out at night. Because they do not tolerate too much moisture in the soil, they come to the surface and appear after rain in the wet days of Spring and Autumn, while hiding in the ground in low temperatures in winter and in summer with very high temperatures.

Millipedes sometimes live up to seven years. They overwinter as adults and lay eggs individually or in small groups in the soil. Black worm females lay between 20 and 300 eggs, which hatch in a few weeks. The black worm reaches sexual maturity in the second year, while others spend four to five years in the larval stage.

In the same family belong centipede, with the difference that they bite and enter houses.
